WHALEY BRIDGE GRAND GIVEAWAY!
On Saturday 15th November the Whaley Bridge Rose Queen Festival Committee held their annual Presentation Evening which was attended by the Mayor, Councillor Robin Baldry, and his wife Linda, and the Chair of Whaley Bridge Town Council Jake Walsh. The theme this year was 50s and 60s, with a very imaginative range of fancy dress outfits by both adults and children on show for the Mayor to judge!
The Royalty presented cheques from money raised at the Carnival to representatives from the youth and children’s groups of the area. Donations this year totalled £2800, the largest amount to date, and were presented to Brownies, Guides, St John’s Cadets, Mothers and Toddlers, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Childrens’ section of the Garden Society, Good News Nursery, Good News Friday Club, Taxal & Fernilee School, Taxal & Fernilee Out of School Club, Taxal & Fernilee under 5s, Whaley Bridge School, Whaley Bridge Out of School Club, Wells Dressings, Buxworth Pre-school and Trinity Sunday School and Lost Prophet Youth Group. This brings the total given away since 1993 to £34,405.
A representative also collected a cheque presented to 161st Jodrell’s Own Scouts, an inner city scout troop from Manchester. Next year will be the 90th year this Scout troop will have camped at Taxal each July. The name of this Scout troop came from Colonel Cotton Jodrell, who found them camping in terrible conditions near where the cricket field is now. He owned land at Taxal and donated it to the troop for life – hence the name ‘Jodrell’s Own.’ On the Sunday of their July camp next year the troop will be having a big BBQ to celebrate their 90th anniversary. This year the committee chose them as their charity of the year as they have shown so much interest in the area, and have asked to be involved in our Carnival next year.
Trophies were presented to those who collected the most at the Carnival-
Junior Prize Rhianne Weber £31.07, Adult prize Maureen Moss: £187.94 and Group prize Buxworth School £162.76.
The evening continued with quizzes and games, a buffet, auction and disco – naturally of 50s and 60s music, enjoyed by the good turn to what is becoming the family party night of the year!
The Committee would like to thank all who played any part in supporting the Carnival this year, and are hoping for even more support next year to help make the Carnival even bigger and better for all those who attend to enjoy.
